About Lares
I make my bed linen from the softest, sturdiest, fabrics I can find. I use vintage and contemporary cottons; Irish linens; and silk from France and China.
My favourite fabric to work with is Irish Linen. Individually, each linen thread seems quite fragile and is quite elastic, but collectively and more especially with age, it becomes incredibly strong and dense, and acquires a wonderful smoothness with each wash.
I French seam everything, partly because this makes for a longer lasting product, partly because I believe every surface should be soft against the skin, and partly because I think it makes my product more attractive. One of the things that makes my grandmothers old linens so valuable to me is the beautiful finish - her old things are so lovely, inside and out. I guess that's what I'm trying to create with Lares: Future heirlooms.
I sell through a combination of commissioned work, web-sales and Craft Fairs.
